POLICY WIRE — Kano, Nigeria — A mass wedding ceremony in Kano State, northern Nigeria, saw 1,500 couples tie the knot in an event organized by the regional government. The two-day event aimed to assist individuals who would otherwise struggle to afford a wedding due to financial constraints.

According to the regional government, each bride received a dowry of 200,000 naira (US$147) and support to establish a small business. the couples were provided with essential household items including beds, mattresses, — and blankets.

Before the wedding, the couples underwent screening processes, though specific details were not disclosed. The event underscores the government’s effort to support young couples in the region.
