India’s Gen Z Protesters Face Online Threats After Minister’s Ouster

POLICY WIRE — New Delhi, India — Days after Generation Z protesters, led by the Cockroach Janta Party, succeeded in ousting India’s education minister, dozens of women who participated in the demonstrations report facing a barrage of online threats. The protesters claim that although the movement has concluded, they’re now confronting a new struggle on two fronts: legal challenges and doxxing.

The Cockroach Janta Party, a youth-led organization, spearheaded the protests that culminated in the resignation of the education minister. The group has since disbanded, but the participants find themselves targeted online. Many have reported receiving threats, harassment, — and the unauthorized release of personal information.

“While the protest movement has ended, the threats continue,” said one protester who wished to remain anonymous for safety reasons. “We’re now dealing with a different kind of battle, one that’s fought in the courts and through the misuse of our personal data.”

Legal experts warn that doxxing, the act of publishing private or identifying information about an individual without their consent, is a growing concern in the digital age. “Doxxing not only violates privacy but can also lead to physical threats and harassment,” said legal analyst Rajiv Sharma. “It’s a worrying trend that needs to be addressed urgently.”

The Indian government has yet to comment on the ongoing threats faced by the protesters. However, cybersecurity firms are urging authorities to take swift action to protect the victims and bring the perpetrators to justice.
