Sánchez’s Migrant Policy Under Fire as EU Crisis Deepens

POLICY WIRE — Madrid, Spain — Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez is grappling with severe repercussions following the migrant crisis in Ceuta, Spain’s North African enclave. The chaotic scenes of thousands of migrants entering Ceuta last Thursday have triggered a wave of alarmist rhetoric and political backlash.

Footage of the migrant influx quickly went viral, inciting an online frenzy among the far right. European mainstream leaders were swift to attribute the crisis to Spain’s liberal immigration policies. In a letter organized by Italy and Denmark and signed by 22 EU heads of government, they appeared to blame the crisis on Sánchez’s recent program to regularize undocumented migrants, which received over a million applications.

The letter argued that Europe must “[address] all policies that can serve as pull factors.” The EU leaders’ response underscores the growing divisions within the bloc over immigration policy and the increasing influence of the far right.

Sánchez, who has been one of the few European leaders to stand up to former U.S. President Trump, now faces coercive diplomacy — and an emboldened far right at home. His progressive stance on immigration has put him at odds with more conservative EU nations, exacerbating existing tensions.

The Ceuta crisis has further strained Spain’s relations with Morocco, from which most of the migrants originated. Diplomatic efforts are underway to address the root causes of the migrant influx and to stabilize the situation in Ceuta.
