London Approves First Minicab Licences for Self-Driving Taxis

POLICY WIRE — London, UK — Transport for London (TfL) has granted the first minicab licences to Uber and autonomous technology developer Wayve, allowing them to offer self-driving taxi rides to paying customers. The service will initially include a human safety driver. The companies announced that trips will commence in the UK “later this summer” prior to a full public launch.

The licences mark a significant step towards integrating autonomous vehicles into London’s transportation network. Both companies emphasized the importance of safety, noting that a human driver will be present during the initial phase to oversee operations and ensure passenger safety.

The introduction of self-driving taxis is expected to provide several benefits, including increased efficiency, reduced traffic congestion, and lower emissions. However, the presence of a safety driver indicates that full autonomy is still a work in progress.
