POLICY WIRE — City, Country — Growing opposition to Meta’s smart glasses has emerged, driven by concerns over privacy invasions and non-consensual filming. A spokesperson from activist group Everyone Hates Elon stated, “Most people don’t want pervert glasses that can film us without our consent.”
The group has initiated a series of guerilla advertisements and an email campaign urging individuals to legally object to being filmed by Meta glasses under the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR). Over 20,000 people have signed the campaign.
Rights groups have issued warnings that the glasses pose a significant threat to the right to privacy. Reports indicate that Germany is considering a ban on the product. Despite Meta’s safety guidelines, which prohibit the use of smart glasses for ‘harassment, infringing on privacy rights, or capturing sensitive information,’ numerous women have shared experiences of being filmed without consent on social media.
Guardian columnist and Opinion editor Kirsty Major has expressed her skepticism about the glasses, highlighting fears of surveillance and the potential for misuse by ‘creepy men.’ She asserts that these concerns make it impossible for her to support the product.
