Beirut Port Blast: Families Demand Justice Six Years On

POLICY WIRE — Beirut, Lebanon — Six years after the catastrophic Beirut port blast, families of the victims gathered to commemorate the tragedy and renew their calls for truth and accountability. The explosion, which occurred on August 4, 2020, resulted in over 200 deaths and thousands of injuries, devastating large parts of the city.

“We’re here today not just to remember, but to demand justice,” said Jana Nasr, who lost her husband in the blast. “Six years is too long to wait for answers. We need to know why this happened — and who’s responsible.”

The blast was caused by the detonation of ammonium nitrate stored unsafely in the port. Investigations have been marred by delays — and allegations of government obstruction. To date, no high-level officials have been held accountable.

Rana Eid, another victim’s relative, echoed the sentiments of many: “We won’t stop until those responsible are brought to justice. Our loved ones deserve nothing less.”

The Lebanese government has faced severe criticism for its handling of the aftermath. Multiple investigations have been launched, but progress has been slow, and public trust in the authorities remains low.

International attention has waned over the years, but the families remain resolute. “The world may have moved on, but we haven’t,” said Ali Hassan, whose sister was killed in the explosion. “We will continue to fight for justice, no matter how long it takes.”

As the anniversary passes, the families vow to keep the pressure on Lebanese authorities, hoping that persistent advocacy will eventually lead to accountability and prevent similar tragedies in the future.
