Ex-Neo-Nazi Activist Convicted for Harassing Jewish MP in UK Elections

POLICY WIRE — London, UK — Joshua Bonehill-Paine, a former neo-Nazi activist, has been convicted of racially-aggravated harassment against Luciana Berger, a Jewish Member of Parliament who’s standing as a Conservative Party candidate in the upcoming local elections.

Bonehill-Paine was found guilty of the offense following a trial at Westminster Magistrates’ Court. The charges stem from a series of incidents where he targeted Berger with antisemitic abuse.

“The court has delivered a clear message that hate and intolerance have no place in our society,” said a spokesperson for the Crown Prosecution Service. “This conviction underscores our commitment to prosecuting those who engage in racially-aggravated harassment.”

Berger, who previously served as a Labour MP, left the party in 2019, citing what she described as rampant antisemitism. She joined the Conservative Party — and is now contesting the local elections as their candidate.

“I am deeply grateful for the support I have received throughout this ordeal,” Berger said in a statement. “This conviction is a victory for all those who stand against hate — and discrimination.”

Bonehill-Paine, who has a history of far-right activism, was sentenced to a community order and required to attend a rehabilitation program. He is also prohibited from contacting Berger or visiting certain areas.

The case has drawn significant attention, highlighting the ongoing issue of antisemitism within political discourse in the UK. It also raises questions about the vetting processes for political candidates and the measures in place to protect them from harassment.
