POLICY WIRE — Tokyo, Japan — Three lions have died of suspected heatstroke at Tokyo’s Tama Zoological Park amid Japan’s record-breaking heatwave. The zoo has suspended its lion exhibit since July 23 after 10 out of 16 big cats showed signs of heat-related distress, including loss of appetite and decreased activity, a spokeswoman told Agence France-Presse on Tuesday.

Despite receiving treatment, three lionesses succumbed to the extreme conditions. Officials are now enhancing animal welfare measures to address the challenges posed by climate-fueled extreme weather.
