POLICY WIRE — Jerusalem, Israel — Israeli military operations in the Gaza Strip have escalated significantly in the days following a US-brokered agreement intended to facilitate the disarmament of Hamas. The agreement, described by some as a ‘breakthrough,’ hasn’t resulted in a cessation of hostilities.
Reports indicate that Israeli strikes have targeted multiple locations within Gaza, resulting in casualties and widespread destruction. The Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) stated that the operations are in response to continued rocket fire from Hamas into Israeli territory.
“The IDF is committed to ensuring the safety — and security of Israeli citizens. We will continue to take necessary actions to defend our nation,” an IDF spokesperson said.
International observers have expressed deep concern over the ongoing violence. United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres called for an immediate de-escalation and urged all parties to adhere to the terms of the agreement.
“It’s imperative that all sides respect the agreement — and work towards a lasting peace. The civilian population in Gaza is suffering immensely,” Guterres stated.
The Palestinian Health Ministry reported that dozens of civilians have been killed in the recent strikes, with hundreds more injured. Medical facilities in Gaza are overwhelmed, struggling to provide adequate care amid the ongoing bombardment.
Hamas has denied claims that it’s not complying with the disarmament terms, stating that Israel’s continued military actions are a violation of the agreement. “Israel is not interested in peace; they’re interested in maintaining control and causing suffering to our people,” a Hamas official said.
The situation remains fluid, with both sides accusing each other of breaching the agreement. Diplomatic efforts are ongoing to mediate a lasting ceasefire and ensure the implementation of the disarmament provisions.
