POLICY WIRE — Beijing, China — The summer retreat season for China’s political and scientific elite has commenced, with key figures convening at the seaside resort of Beidaihe, approximately 300 kilometers east of Beijing.
State news agency Xinhua reported on Monday that Cai Qi, often referred to as President Xi Jinping’s “chief of staff,” extended “sincere greetings” to various academics and scientists invited to the retreat. The report didn’t disclose the names of those invited but confirmed they included specialists working in various fields.
Beidaihe has long served as a traditional venue for China’s leadership to discuss policy and strategic matters in a more relaxed environment. The gathering is expected to include discussions on current national and international issues, as well as future policy directions.
