60-Year-Old Woman Found Alive 11 Days After Disappearance Near Hong Kong Cemetery

POLICY WIRE — Hong Kong — Hong Kong authorities have located a 60-year-old woman, Ngan Lai-ching, alive on a hillside near a cemetery, 11 days after she went missing. The search operation was significantly hindered by a typhoon — and subsequent heavy rains.

Police reported on Monday that Ngan left her residence at Kwong Ming Court in Tseung Kwan O on the morning of July 24 without carrying a mobile phone or an Octopus card. Authorities noted that she has a history of schizophrenia.

Ngan’s daughter reported her missing after she failed to return home the following day. The discovery came as a relief to her family and the community, who had been concerned for her safety given the challenging search conditions.

The search efforts were complicated by severe weather, including a typhoon that struck the region shortly after Ngan went missing, followed by days of heavy rainfall. Despite these obstacles, rescue teams persisted in their search, eventually finding Ngan on the hillside.

Ngan was taken to a local hospital for evaluation — and treatment. Her current condition is stable, — and she’s receiving necessary medical care.
