Sri Lanka Deploys Troops to Quell Deadly Riot at Mahara Prison

POLICY WIRE — Colombo, Sri Lanka — Sri Lankan authorities deployed hundreds of troops and elite commandos on Sunday to quell a deadly riot at the overcrowded Mahara Prison, located just outside the capital, Colombo. The disturbance resulted in the death of one inmate — and injuries to six others, according to police reports.

Deputy Police Inspector-General Sanjeewa Medawatte confirmed that the situation was brought under control after inmates caused extensive damage to multiple prison buildings on Saturday. “We received reinforcements from the armed forces and the Special Task Force commandos to restore order and regain control over the inmates,” Medawatte stated.

The riot at Mahara Prison, which houses a significantly higher number of inmates than its designed capacity, underscores the pressing issues of overcrowding and security within Sri Lanka’s prison system. This incident follows a series of disturbances in correctional facilities across the country, highlighting the need for urgent reforms and improved conditions.
