A 7-month-old girl died after a high-speed police chase in Georgia ended in a 10-car crash. The driver had a suspended license and active warrants.
POLICY WIRE — Atlanta, Georgia — A 7-month-old girl lost her life following a high-speed police pursuit in Georgia that escalated into a multi-vehicle collision.
The incident occurred on Interstate 20 in DeKalb County, where Georgia State Patrol troopers observed an Audi sedan traveling at 110 mph in a 60 mph zone. The vehicle was also seen weaving through traffic with its headlights off, according to the Georgia Department of Public Safety.
The driver, later identified as 33-year-old Cameron Gabriel Kemp, attempted to evade officers by briefly stopping on the shoulder before fleeing. During the chase, Kemp lost control while exiting the highway, causing his vehicle to hit a guardrail and collide with multiple cars, resulting in a 10-vehicle pileup. One of the impacted vehicles carried three infants, including Kalayia Tolbert, who succumbed to her injuries in the hospital.
Kemp was hospitalized for his injuries but later died. Investigators revealed he was operating the vehicle with a suspended license and had outstanding arrest warrants for probation violations and failure to appear in court. He previously served time in the Georgia Department of Corrections for aggravated battery. Authorities have not yet disclosed the condition of the other two infants involved in the crash.
The Georgia Department of Public Safety expressed deep sorrow over the loss of the young child, stating that no enforcement action justifies such a tragedy. The agency pledged to thoroughly investigate the circumstances and continue supporting those affected by the incident.
