POLICY WIRE — Hong Kong — Hong Kong police have arrested 25 individuals, some as young as 13, in a significant operation targeting a loan shark syndicate. The syndicate was found to be charging victims annual interest rates of up to 282%.
Authorities reported on Thursday that the crime ring had disbursed a total of HK$200 million (US$25.5 million) in loans to approximately 2,000 residents over the past year. At least HK$8 million in criminal proceeds were funneled into the personal accounts of the core members.
During operations conducted on Tuesday — and Wednesday, officers raided three locations associated with the syndicate. The police haven’t disclosed further details about the ongoing investigation.
