POLICY WIRE — Washington, D.C. — Prospective buyers eyeing a new full-size pickup will find a dynamic market ahead, featuring two complete redesigns and three heavily updated models. Automotive experts at Edmunds have compiled an essential overview of the 2027 light-duty truck class, ensuring consumers have all the details on pricing, capability, and features before making a purchase.
Chevrolet introduces a fully redesigned 2027 Silverado 1500, which pairs a familiar exterior with a modernized interior and advanced technology. The powertrain lineup is anchored by two potent V8 options: a 402-horsepower 5.7-liter and a 481-horsepower 6.6-liter. Buyers can also select a 350-horsepower turbocharged four-cylinder or a 305-horsepower diesel six-cylinder optimized for fuel efficiency, with maximum towing reaching 13,700 pounds and a payload capacity up to 2,340 pounds.
Inside the cabin, the new Silverado adds up to 60 inches of combined screen displays alongside contemporary driver-assistance capabilities. The truck continues to be offered in regular, extended, and crew-cab configurations across seven distinct trim levels, spanning from the standard Work Truck to the luxurious High Country and off-road-focused ZR2.
Meanwhile, the perpetual rivalry continues as the Ford F-150 receives its own set of updates for 2027. A new turbocharged 3.0-liter V6 serves as the standard engine, delivering peak torque quicker off the line than its predecessor, while Ford expands availability for the optional 5.0-liter V8.
Ford is also expanding its trim offerings with the debut of the F-150 Carhartt, which features specialized styling and rugged interior materials based on the XLT trim. Lower-cost variations of the popular Tremor and Raptor models aim to accommodate tighter budgets, alongside upgrades to Ford’s BlueCruise hands-free driving technology to support towing.
Serving as a premium corporate cousin to the Silverado, the redesigned GMC Sierra 1500 offers the same cab styles and engine options with slightly adjusted capacity limits. GMC elevates its truck with distinctive styling and luxury interior details, featuring an expansive three-screen dashboard layout and a versatile Multi-Flex center console.
Ram enters 2027 with two major vehicle debuts, beginning with the street performance-oriented Rumble Bee. This wide-body truck prioritizes acceleration and on-road handling, offering three V8 engine choices including a supercharged 6.2-liter variant pumping out 777 horsepower and capable of reaching a top speed of 170 mph.
For off-road enthusiasts, the Ram 1500 SRT TRX makes its much-anticipated return with the same 777-horsepower V8 engine. The revamped TRX pairs its immense power with a revised suspension system and a plush cabin without sacrificing its rugged off-road performance.
Toyota rounds out the segment by sharpening the styling of the Tundra and introducing a new Honeycomb exterior paint option for the TRD Pro. Additionally, the new Trailhunter trim joins the lineup specifically tailored for overlanding, featuring all-terrain tires, specialized suspension tuning, underbody skid plates, and low-speed trail cruise control.
