16-Year-Old Student Charged With Murder of Classmate in Johor
A 16-year-old student faces murder charges following the death of a classmate at SMK Dato' Seth in Johor. Authorities continue investigating the incident.
POLICY WIRE — Batu Pahat, Malaysia — A 16-year-old student appeared in the Batu Pahat magistrates’ court on Thursday, Oct 15, to face a murder charge involving the death of his classmate.
The accused, a Form Four student, is alleged to have killed 16-year-old Irene Sofiya Mohd Khairool Faisal at SMK Dato’ Seth in Yong Peng. The incident reportedly occurred between 2.30pm and 4pm on Oct 3.
Irene was discovered unconscious and bleeding in the school hall. Her grandmother, who arrived at the school after the girl failed to return home by 5.30pm, reportedly found her.
Three 16-year-old male students were initially detained in connection with the case, with one individual subsequently remanded for six days. During the closed-door hearing, the accused did not enter a plea, as murder cases fall under the jurisdiction of the High Court. Magistrate Mustaqim Sukarno presided over the session, where the teenager acknowledged understanding the charge.
The court denied bail and scheduled Dec 22 for case management and the submission of the victim’s autopsy report. Under Section 302 of the Penal Code, a murder conviction carries a potential sentence of 30 to 40 years in prison, caning, or the death penalty; however, the Child Act 2001 prohibits the death penalty for individuals under 18.
Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim expressed his condolences to the victim’s family and urged a thorough investigation. Education Minister Fadhlina Sidek confirmed that her ministry is cooperating with police, noting that while the school is equipped with CCTV, the specific area where the body was found lacked camera coverage.
The Ministry of Education has launched a broader review of school security, including standard operating procedures, discipline, and management protocols. Reporting by Policy-Wire (PW)
